Playwriting Workshop with Leelee Jackson

In this workshop, Jackson lead artists in helping strengthen their ability to write monologue/dialogue. Attendees were given a writing prompt and the option to hear their work be read out loud by professional actors. By hearing their work read out loud, attendees could take advantage of the opportunity to see/hear/feel how their work translates from page to stage. BLAC requested that attendees came with ideas/unfinished work/empty handed and leave with so much more. Selected participants will received one published copy of Jackson one act play Comb Your Hair (Or You’ll Look Like a Slave).
Leelee Jackson (she/her) is a playwright whose work aligns itself with the lives of Black queer and straight womxn. Jackson is passionate about community engagement and has produced her plays with teams ranging from 4 to 21 people of color who lead, star in and develop theatre all over the west coast. In 2017, her play Comb Your Hair (Or You'll Look Like a Slave) was honored and performed at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival national competition as a finalist. In 2019, her full length minstrel piece The Shit Show: An American Allegory was a national finalist at the Austin Film Festival. Jackson is from the Bay Area and currently resides in Southern California where she obtained her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts/Playwriting in 2019.
